Being the biggest economic power in East Africa, Kenya is one of Beijing’s most favored partners in Africa. Chinese demand has become an essential key to Kenya’s economic growth.
In the DRC, China prioritises economics over politics, and its promise of massive economic investment in infrastructure and mineral extraction is based purely on economic principles without political conditionality.
China’s engagement in Kenya is mainly aimed at securing a stable source of natural resources from the region, as well as using its excess construction capacity externally and penetrate new markets for Chinese manufactured goods and services and new investment opportunities for its excess capital surplus. To achieve this, the country has put more emphasis on diplomatic missions, soft power and economic cooperation.
